The scams hitting UK small businesses right now
Fake invoices and "change of bank details"
An email that looks like it's from a real supplier says their bank account has changed. The money goes to the fraudster. Always ring the supplier on a number you already have before changing payment details.
Boss or director impersonation
"Are you at your desk? I need you to make an urgent payment / buy gift cards." It's usually a lookalike address or a free email account using your boss's name.
HMRC, courier and bank messages
Tax refunds, missed parcels and "unusual activity" texts that lead to fake login pages. HMRC never asks you to confirm bank details by email or text.
Account and invoice "documents"
A shared document or invoice link that asks you to log in to Microsoft 365 or Google to view it. The login page is fake and steals your password.
